Location: The Renaissance Chicago Hotel
(All Institute programs will be held at The Renaissance. The AAML has reserved a block of rooms.)

Often referred to as one of the greatest benefits offered to Academy Fellows, the Institute for Family Law Associates is a comprehensive training program specifically designed for Associates of AAML Fellows. The Institute is a 4-day program held at Renaissance in Chicago as discussed below. We have an outstanding faculty of Fellows from throughout the country who are eager to help your associate lawyer develop his/her family law practice skills.

Each participant will be assigned a Fellow faculty member as a "mentor" who will guide your associate through the program, answer questions, give encouragement, and share valuable practical experience. Past participants (and Fellows) have raved about the value of this part of the program.

We will once again offer two separate programs for 2012:

(1) The Introductory Program will be limited to 40 young associates. The Introductory Program is ideal for associates who have 3 years or less experience in family law practice. The range of topics to be addressed include: client and file management; learning to read 1040s and financial statements; accounting 101 for family law attorneys; divorce tax issues; evidentiary issues; basics of business valuation in divorce; a guide to retirement assets in divorce; how to be an effective 2nd chair at trial; and other practice hot tips.

(2) The Advanced Program is most valuable for associates who have attended the Introductory Program in prior years or those who have a minimum of 4 years of family law practice experience. Typically, the Advanced associate has conducted deposition, worked directly with clients, and has personally handled court proceedings at some level. The upcoming 2012 Advanced Session will focus on negotiations and the art of persuasion. THERE WILL ONLY BE 24 REGISTRANTS FOR THE ADVANCED PROGRAM. For 2012, the Program will include special presentations and a work shop which focuses on settlement negotiations, and will include faculty from the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation. Many of our Fellows have attended the Negotiation Program and have found it to be incredibly rewarding. We are extremely fortunate to offer this unique training opportunity for your associate, but space is limited to 24 participants.

In addition to improving necessary skills that are important to you and your clients, your associate will have a terrific opportunity to meet other peers and Fellows from around the country. These relationship will enhance your associate's networking capabilities and referral base.
